About Thieme Art Award

In its 7-year history the Thieme Art Award has proved itself to be the leading Dutch prize for talented young artists. Folkert de Jong, Karen Sargsyan and Rachid Ben Ali all won this prize before making their international breakthrough.

This award for the visual arts, which takes its name from  the Thieme Print Media Group, has been given each year since 2003 to a Dutch or foreign artist under the age of 35. The winner of the award receives a full-colour monograph – often the first and hence an important publication for young artists. Thieme Art (part of the Thieme Print Media Group) is the publisher of the books and arranges for their distribution and sale. In addition, the winner gets a solo stand of 25 square metres at the next edition of Art Amsterdam.

On average, some seventy artists  compete for the Thieme Art Award. A jury, which consists of art professionals and whose composition changes annually, shortlists five of the artists. Each of the five is invited to display two works in a special stand at the exhibition. The jury chooses the winner during the first two days of the fair. On Thursday 27 at 16:00h the winner of the Thieme Art Award 2010 will be announced.

The jury of the Thieme Art Award 2010 consists of Hans den Hartog Jager (critic of a.o. NRC Handelsblad and writer), Katja Schröder (director of Westfälischer Kunstverein) and Geert Verbeke (founder and director of Verbeke Foundation).
